The Badische Neueste Nachrichten, one of the major daily newspapers in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, has been producing all ads with the ProcSet Workflow Solution since October 6, 2014.
For more than 110 ad consultants and 80 technical employees, the browser-based system is now the central tool for a paperless and highly efficient work process. The successful introduction was preceded by an eight-month project in which all requirements were systematically worked out and then implemented in the ProcSet system.
Due to the high development status of the solution, the complex workflow could be mapped almost completely with existing components. This once again confirmed the great advantage of the browser-based configuration, which enables all workflows to be built up from individual basic components.
A particular challenge was to connect the commercial system ADBL from alfamedia, which was introduced about 15 years ago, and to integrate it as seamlessly as possible into the overall solution. Both InDesign and PageOne are used as editors for the ad design.
Special emphasis was placed on a sophisticated and highly automated correction workflow based on emailing PDF forms between ad consultant, customer and typesetting department. The publisher’s traditionally high quality standards also required the integration of the in-house proofreading department, which was also converted to digital PDF proofs.
Since existing system components are based on the EPS format, an EPS workflow was implemented, which is completely handled by the GraphicEngine integrated in the ProcSet Workflow Solution.
BNN expects a further improvement of the communication between consultant, customer and publishing house staff by using the also licensed portal solution “ProcSet involve”, which allows to send print documents and galley proofs via the Internet.
About the Badische Neueste Nachrichten:
With a paid circulation of around 150,000 copies and over 400,000 readers daily, Badische Neueste Nachrichten is one of the major daily newspapers in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. In the concert of the state’s papers, the newspaper is an unmistakable voice of Baden and the region between the Electoral Palatinate and Ortenau, between the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley.
Nine local editions in the circulation area in the Karlsruhe, Bruchsal and Pforzheim area as well as in Central Baden underline the character of this newspaper as a regional newspaper for Baden. A full editorial team of about 90 editors works on this image every day. The majority of the editorial staff, however, supplies the readers with local news in the local editorial offices at ten locations in the circulation area. In addition to the BNN editions of Karlsruhe, Rastatt, Baden-Baden, and Ettlingen, this is how the Pforzheimer Kurier, the Bruchsaler Rundschau, the Brettener Nachrichten, and last but not least the Acher- und Bühler Bote are produced.
Even though the focus of reporting is local and regional, the Badische Neueste Nachrichten offers its readers a broad and comprehensive range of news. The editorial offices at the BNN parent company in Karlsruhe rely on the services of the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) and the DAPD news agency. In Berlin, the BNN maintains a joint capital city office together with other regional newspapers. A separate correspondent for the BNN reports from the state capital Stuttgart. Together with other renowned German newspapers, Badische Neueste Nachrichten has a dense network of correspondents in Europe and around the world.
